"I don't know why people are so surprised," she said, about the exaggerated reaction to her heritage upon winning the crown. "I'm an American and a Lebanese, but I'm an American first, and everyone in America has their own ethnicity and comes from a different background . . . we all come from somewhere. We don't know who we are until we know where we came from."
She went on to say that, though she is Muslim, there is more to her than her faith. "I believe that religion doesn't define me and it does not define my family," she said, in the interview. "We have an abundance of faiths, and we respect all religions. Yes, we're a Muslim family, but we're also very cultured and we have a mixture of different religions. For example, my brother-in-law is Catholic...I even have two cousins here in New York City who are Jewish. As you can see, my family is just an amazing melting pot of wonderful religions and faiths."
Seems to me that Miss USA 2010 is a sensible one!

The ACLU is alleging that school officials were present at a meeting wherein a decision was made to hold two proms. Those officials are denying that claim. Of course, if the administration turns out to be responsible, it brings this case to a whole new level of wrong-doing and discrimination. But it's obvious that some adults were involved in organizing this event. And some kids surely must know the truth.
Come on, guys! Tell us what you know!

Incidentally, it was the administration at Pembroke Pines -- Bonilla's high school -- that suggested he run for prom queen in the first place. Apparently, he had proposed the idea of running for Prom King but wearing a dress. School administrators decided it would be more appropriate if he ran as the Queen instead.
Bonilla's campaign slogan was "Vote Omar for prom queen -- time for a change." The administrators at Pembroke Pines might take note.

A couple of the ideas that got negged include using reusable water bottles on the big night, sharing limos and/or taking a bus, and doling out bags of seeds as parting gifts. Instead, the group compromised: the gift bags the committee gave out on prom night were made of recycled paper, inside of which was a little packet of seeds.
In the meantime, however, Gronkowski has continued her crusade via Facebook, where she has a page that touts green prom tips for other students."I wanted to make more people pay attention to making proms green. The response on the Facebook page has been mixed; some people love it and other people not as much," she said.

What do you guys think? Does Bieber deserve the nom? Or does BET need some ratings help for their awards ceremony?
Congrats to all of the lovely contestants!
Fakih, who has degrees in economics and business management and plans to go to law school, was born in Lebanon, lived as a baby in New York, and was raised in Michigan. She is the first muslim woman recorded to have won the title.
Congratulations to the new Miss USA!

It's the moment you've all been waiting for: the bloodsucking teen heartthrobs of that Twilight movie were finally on Oprah. It was everything you could have asked for and more (mostly): Robert Pattinson went door to door inviting stunned teenagers (not to mention completely insane parents) to invite them to the show. Taylor Lautner went to a sorority house comprised of girls so obsessed with the movie that they have an entire room in their house dedicated to it. Kristen Stewart invited a superfan onstage and gave her the ring she wears in the movie. Check out a clip of the show:
Check out today's column by the Washington Post's John Kelly -- who has dug up some timeless -- also: humiliating! and/or romantic! -- prom tales throughout the ages. Highlights include: dateless students being set up by their English teacher; dinner cruise woes, and a pre-prom arrest.
Check out the full article here.
Lately, there's been a lot of debate about whether or not high schools should breathalyze students to test for alcohol before they go to the prom. It's the age-old back-and-forth: insult the dignity of teenagers by treating them like criminals, or tow the hard line and make them follow the rules. Because, as everybody knows, when you force a teenager to do something, he or she always complies. Totally. The general consensus so far seems to be that teenagers who want to drink on prom night will find a way to do so.
But then there's the case of this one high school, Jefferson City High, in Missouri, where the kids apparently requested the breathalyzers. So maybe I'm wrong. You tell me. Where do you guys line up on this debate?

After what has felt like an eternity of speculation regarding the all-but-confirmed romance regarding Twilight stars Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, Oprah -- the one and only -- has finally gotten the two to come clean. The duo recently filmed an episode of the show with the media mogul, who allegedly promised to play softball on air in re: their relationship status, if the two would, in exchange, give her the real gossip. Of course, no one says no to Oprah:
"Oprah agreed beforehand she wouldn't be too hard on [Rob and Kristen] if they told her what was really going on," said an alleged source, who was at the taping of the episode. "Both Rob and Kristen's people and [film studio] Summit then confirmed ahead of time [Rob and Kristen] are together and are dating. One hundred percent."
The episode, in which presumably no information is revealed whatsoever, will air on May 13.

Tickets for the event will go on sale to the public on Friday, May 14th at 11 a.m. ET at Ticketmaster.com. Prices will range from $25 to $75, and ticket auctions on premium seats and VIP packages will also be available. Visit www.nashvillerising.org for more details.

"Being at home during the storm, I honestly could not believe what was happening to the city and the people I love so dearly," Swift told The Associated Press in an e-mail. "Nashville is my home, and the reason why I get to do what I love. I have always been proud to be a Nashvillian, but especially now, seeing the love that runs through this city when there are people in crisis."
Swift made the decision public on the Thursday night telethon, "Flood Relief with Vince Gill and Friends," which was hosted by local station WSMV.

One thing Stewart wouldn't talk about, however, was her much-speculated-upon relationship with one Robert Pattinson. "I would never cheapen my relationships by talking about them," she said. "People say, 'Just say who you're dating. Then people will stop being so ravenous about it.' It's like, No they won't! They'll ask for specifics."
Smart girl.

Haselteen Rumbo, a 90-year-old grandmother from Indiana, is finally going to the prom. Rumbo, who will apparently be attending this spring's event with her grandson, never went to her own prom as a high school student (she and her now-late husband weren't big dancers, apparently, and so skipped the whole thing). But she decided after seeing The Bucket List that she wanted to see what the brouhaha was all about. And it worked out well for everyone, it seems! 18-year-old Ronnie Blalock, the nice boy who issued the invitation, has been benefiting from the good deed. "A lot of girls who have never talked to me now talk to me," he said. "I enjoy the attention." Well!
Last night, the fashion world (plus more than its fair share of celebrities) ventured out in their fanciest, craziest, most eye-catching outfits, to brave the cameras at the annual Met Costume Institute Ball -- aka, the fashion crowd's version of the prom. The caliber of the outfits, quite obviously, varied drastically. After all, playing it safe at the Met Ball is frowned upon by the elite ranks of the fashion crowd -- and so, while the highs were high, the lows were...well, you'll see. Take a look at our roundup of the great, the not-so-hot, and the outright questionable ensembles of the night.

Sarah Jessica Parker

SJP walks fashion's genius-debacle line on a regular basis. Here, though, she kills it.
Naomi Watts

It is the rare actress who can manage a long, silky dress with an enormous bow on the shoulder. Naomi Watts, however, has managed to pull it off beautifully here. Also: great shoes.
Emma Watson

Girl isn't a Chanel muse for no reason. It's not every teenage girl who can pull off a long white gown!
Anne Hathaway

This dress is normally a little princessy for my taste. But oh! It's Anne Hathaway. Princess-y is forever appropriate.
Nicole Ritchie

Nicole Ritchie basically rotates between variations on the exact same outfit, but hey. It's a really good outfit. Should be a lesson for us all.
January Jones

I have mixed feelings about this one. What do you guys think: Yay or nay?
Kirsten Dunst

Oh hi, Marie Antoinette! You're back! I missed you! (Really -- where is Kiki Dunst hiding these days? And... can I see those crazy shoes up close?)
Kristen Stewart

Takes Vampire fashion to a whole new place.
And finally....
Tina Fey?

Is it you? Are you really wearing a catsuit?
