June 2010 Archives

Prejean, who was de-crowned as Miss USA 2009 due to violation of her contract, inspired a fair amount of controversy when she condemned gay marriage after winning the crown. Since then, she has been embroiled in a number of mini-scandals: There was a sexually explicit video, illicit pictures, a law suit, and pageant-sponsored breast implants.
So we're happy to hear that her reason for being in the news this time around is less troublesome!
Word has it that Miley Cyrus -- controversial teen pop star (and vampire-hater) -- will perform has it at the closing ceremony of the 2010 Fifa World Cup. Cyrus has been getting a lot of attention lately, for everything from her sexy-seeming behavior, to her new album (Can't Be Tamed) to her comments about other celebs. But in the end, the girl knows how to put on a good performance. Plus, it's a reason for non-soccer fans to tune in!
What song do you think she'll sing?
On Jimmy Kimmel this week, the cast of Jersey Shore had the performances of a lifetime ... in a reenactment of Twilight. Definitely worth a watch on a hot summer day!
Check out the truly amazing video here:
Get ready, Twihards. You only have four days until the premiere of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse is officially released in theaters. How will you pass the time until the big day? You could re-read all of the books in the series -- but depending on how fast you read, this task could take you about four days, or about four years. You could also start planning your outfit for the occasion. For inspiration, check out some of the get-ups the Twilight stars wore to their world premiere, in Los Angeles this week.

Kristen Stewart:

This sort of reminds me of a swan, which is basically the opposite (in my mind) of a vampire. Kstew, always the iconoclast!
Robert Pattinson:

I am not quite sure about the color -- points for adventurousness, however! -- but the fit is quite nice!
Nikki Reed:

Oh, maybe the swan theme was coordinated? Or is this more... Swan Lake? Hard to say?
Ashley Greene:

Greene goes Grecian. Understated, comparatively!
Anna Kendrick:

Short and fun! There is some other stuff going on here but I'm not sure how to get into it.
Dakota Fanning:

Ditto with the short and fun, minus a little bit of the craziness going on.
Taylor Lautner:

The boy does love his Rat Pack look. For good reason!
Last week, nearly 200 California teens gathered to celebrate a familiar rite of passage: The prom. But there was something different on this particular night. The event, called the "No Worries Prom" was a chance for teens suffering from life-threatening illnesses to let loose, forget their worries, and have an unforgettable night.
The prom was sponsored by the No Worries Now Foundation, which was started in 2006 by a then 16-year-old high school student, Fred Scarf. Scarf, now a 20-year-old junior at Cornell University, said he came up with the idea to honor his best friend, Shiri Gumbiner, who died at 16 from a rare bone cancer called osteosarcoma.
"We planned to go to prom together," Scarf said, in an interview with CNN. "Prom is like the ultimate milestone that's saying you braved the four years in high school. That was one of the things you really hoped to do. And we never had a chance to do it."
The foundation also provides all prom-goers (dates included) with something to wear: Dresses, tuxes, and even hair and makeup services, are donated to the cause.
What an awesome and meaningful way to remember a friend.
Thought you had a crazy prom experience? Check out this new digital short by funnymen Jason Bateman and Will Arnett -- both of whom will look familiar to you if you've ever watched the (unfortunately) now-cancelled tv show Arrested Development -- if you want to see what a truly weird prom date looks like. The short (called, naturally, "The Prom Date") stars Arnett, Bateman, Rachael Harris, and Aubrey Plaza.
Happy Friday!
There appears to be a new trend, wherein comic books are made about the "life stories" of wildly popular (and largely Twilight-related) young celebrities. It happened to Kristen Stewart. So it's only fitting that the latest victim of this strange phenomenon is her on- (and maybe off?-) screen paramour: Robert Pattinson.

Unfortunately, the books are rather bland. Here's a sample of the text from the RPatz comic:
"In November 2007, a fledgling, relatively unknown British actor named Robert Pattinson stepped into Powell's bookstore in Portland, Oregon to prepare for a role an an indie film with a near non-existent budget. Alone."
Sigh. How dreary! But that's nothing in comparison with the art:

If nothing else, young Pattinson is more handsome than this, no? Although, really, what do I know? What do you guys think? Would you buy Fame: Robert Pattinson? (Way to get creative with the title!)
In a new ad campaign, Debenhams, a British department store, has opted for a rather unconventional strategy: Not only have they chosen to feature swimsuit ads sans retouching -- they're featuring them right next to a version of the image as it would have run if they had photoshopped away the model's so-called imperfections.

Check out the two ads:

What's more, the company's also featuring a window display of the image marked-up per their standard photoshopping techniques -- so you can see exactly which parts of the body would have been altered in the making of the photoshopped ad.

It's pretty illuminating. Mark Woods, Debenham's creative director, explained the motivation behind the campaign:
"As a responsible retailer we want to help customers make the most of their beauty without bombarding them with unattainable body images. Our campaign is all about making women feel good about themselves - not eroding their self belief and esteem by using false comparisons. Not only does it make sense from a moral point of view, it ticks the economic boxes as well. Millions of pounds a year are spent by organisations retouching perfectly good images. As a rule we only airbrush minor things like pigmentation or stray hair and rely on the natural beauty of models to make our product look great. We are proud to bring the issue of re-touching into the main stream when the likes of Britney Spears and Madonna are using unairbrushed but over-lit images as a shock tactic."
Pretty awesome. Now, if only other retailers would follow suit!
New York magazine's Look Book is rather notorious for documenting the strange, fabulous, and often over-the-top sartorial choices of New Yorkers. This week, they did a special NYC prom-themed edition! It includes examples of near-bridal-wear, silk animal-prints, ostentatious logo-flashing, amazing hair designs, and good old-fashioned sequins.

What do you think? Is this what your prom looked like? Let us know what you and your friends wore to the big event!
The top ten finalists for Duck Brand's "Stuck at Prom" contest have just been announced -- and the dresses in question are truly incredible. The contest, wherein teens from all over the country fashion their prom ensembles out of duck brand duct tape for a chance at a $3,000 college scholarship, is interactive: Now that the official Duck Brand judges have chosen the top ten, online participants (aka you!) can vote for your favorite duct-constructed getup. Couples will be eliminated one by one over the course of the summer.

Happy Friday!
Miley Cyrus has taken a lot of hits lately for what has been considered by some to be overly-adult behavior, and sexually-charged performances.Well, Cyrus has something to say about it.
"Girls are immediately going to say, 'Oh, she's trying to sell sex,'" she told Billy Bush on Access Hollywood recently.
Though I take no position on the young singer's individual actions -- and whether or not they're appropriate for someone her age -- I do think that the girl has a point about the double standard situation. What do you guys think?
"Well, I love Zac Efron, but what's he selling? He's gorgeous, he's hot, I don't go see his movie because I'm like, 'He's such a fantastic actor.' He's a great actor, but he's hot. He's just not in a leotard with his legs out. He has his shirt off. So what's the difference?" she continued. "In 'High School Musical'... he's in basketball shorts and his cutoff tank top and all the girls are dying. It just isn't as obvious when guys do it. I was on tour with the Jonas Brothers my first year and boy bands get away with a lot. For girls, it's always going to be harder. That's not an excuse, it just means we have to work harder."

"People are not ashamed of us; they are really excited this happened," said Ferrusi. "Something really positive is coming out of Hudson. We are this diverse school. It's really great."
Indeed, the town has shown support to the two students -- who ran as king and queen together. Their names are being displayed on a sign at a local business, and a group of locals showed up to watch them be interviewed on Thursday night.
Their parents, too, are proud. "We're all equal. I've always told my son, since he was little, to do what you believe. It's all in your heart and you are who you are," said Ferrusi's mom, Kathryn Ferrusi.
Congratulations to Charlie and Timothy! In an era when gay students like Constance McMillen are forced to endure prolonged and personal discrimination from not only their classmates, but also their classmates' parents, it's refreshing to hear that some schools are supporting the equal rights of their students.
At Sunday night's MTV VMAs, there were some interesting sartorial decisions. Glitter was all the rage. Feathers were in high attendance, too. And then, there was La Lohan. Here's our roundup of some of the best -- and most baffling -- styles of the night.
Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens

They look fine, given the standards of the night. Have these two been together forever, or what?
Kristen Stewart
Kristen Stewart has finally embraced sparkles! I'm not sure how I feel about it.
Katy Perry

Speaking of sparkles... Katy Perry has just decided they would be sufficient for the night.
Scarlett Johanssen
This pretty green dress feels out of place at this event, in regards to how inoffensive it is, but I suppose we'll let it slide. Because I like it!
SNOOKI

The problem is that it's too hard to focus on the dress -- which, I guess it's not so bad? -- because I can't stop staring at her TAN. Ladies! No tanning beds!
Lindsay Lohan

Someone save this girl, she has been taken over by a SPARKLE JUMPSUIT.
Totally kidding. It's a huge deal.
This weekend, a new clip from Eclipse aired during the MTV Music Video Awards -- and it's every bit as tormented, emotionally wrought, and, you know, Twilight as one would want/expect.
The Twilight Saga: Eclipse comes out June 30. Robert Pattinson vs. Taylor Lautner drama guaranteed. Check out the new clip.
This needs little in the way of explanation:
Happy Friday!

"Just wanna clear up a rumor. Liam and I did not break. EVER! We are so happy and a lot of that has to do with the amazing relationship he has with my family. We are both so busy right now, so having them by our side supporting us and our career is such a blessing! So any type of rumor that said there was drama with them is completely false. Thanks for letting me clear that up. :)"
PHEW!

The store will launch at some point later this year. Location is TBD, but it's probably safe to assume it'll be in some sort of minimalist unmarked Chinatown loft.
Yay!
Waiting for all of those prom pictures your friends took to make their way onto Facebook? Keep yourself busy in the meantime by looking at other people's prom pictures. Other people like, say, Brad Pitt, Britney Spears, and Lady Gaga (nee Stefani Germanotta, which is how she appears in this pic). You won't be disappointed.
Aw. Remember when Britney still looked (and, sort of, acted?) like a kid?
Totally invoking her German roots!

Brad Pitt

That hair! Also, did his date for some reason think that the night end with an elopement?
Jennifer Aniston

Wow, again with the hair. But also, adorable.
Britney Spears
Aw. Remember when Britney still looked (and, sort of, acted?) like a kid? Sandra Bullock
Totally invoking her German roots! Heather Locklear

Apparently went to high school at... Baywatch?
And finally... Gaga

Well duh, someone had to go to the prom in a bikini!

What we want to know is, What did Dakota wear?
