Last week, we made the case that an 18-year-old Illinois high school woman -- or anyone, for that matter -- should be able to wear a tuxedo to the prom if she wanted to. The case that prompted the discussion was that of Proviso East High School senior Belinda Sanchez, an openly gay high school senior whose high school administrator told her she couldn't wear a tux to the prom.Well, some happy news! Sanchez, an aspiring civil rights lawyer, brought the case to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and won! She can now wear what sounds like a pretty slick white tuxedo to the dance. Here's to hoping that in the future, all high schools will put aside their old-fashioned notions of sartorial gender norms, and encourage students to express themselves however they like.
In the meantime, Sanchez is just happy to have won out.
"I'm happy," she told the Chicago Tribune. "I didn't just stand up for myself. I did this for everyone who's in a position like I'm in."
"It's like a fairy tale gone totally fairy," she joked, laughin.
