...Speaking of Miss Universe: Ximena Navarrete wasn't the only contestant to don Sherri Hill on the night of the competition; all of the contestants wore versions of her original bandage dress design in the semifinalist lineup -- and Miss Ireland, Miss Albania and Miss Ukraine all wore Sherri Hill in the evening gown portion of the night.

Is the Miss USA competition getting more progressive?

It was only a few years ago that Carrie Prejean made a name for herself by using her Miss USA platform to oppose gay rights. But this year, Claire Buffie -- the 24-year-old Miss New York -- is doing just the opposite: She's competing on a gay rights platform.

"My platform is 'Straight for Equality: Let's Talk,'" said Buffie, in a recent interview. "I feel that it's really important to promote equality for all people, "all" being the main word. As a straight ally, I think it's so necessary to have that straight allies' support for the LGBT community. My platform is politically driven in that I think we need political reform for gay rights, but I've really taken it down to organizations like PFLAG where I have the opportunity for personal mentorship."

Duffie also emphasized the importance of breaking through stigmas and undoing stereotypes about all groups of people -- including women who compete in pageants. "Even upon entering my first local for the Miss America organization four years go, I had some of those stereotypes that are very common -- the hairspray, the eyelashes, the glue and the tape, and all those things," she said. "What I found was a group of incredibly intelligent, driven, and service-minded women. I have found my absolute best friends through this organization."

We'll keep an eye out for Miss Buffie as she heads to the main Miss USA event!

We at Tiza are well-acquainted with American beauty pageants -- but how much do you know about the Colombian pageant circuit? An article in today's New York Times talks about how important beauty pageants are to the culture of this South American country.

According to the article, there are approximately 400 pageants in Colombia every year -- and they've been known to shut down entire towns. Local violence -- an unfortunate mainstay in certain regions throughout the nation -- decreases significantly in weeks leading up to a pageant.  "There's still bombs going off," according to Carl Bower, who spent the last 15 years photographing the Colombian pageant circuit, and whose photographic book project, "Chica Barbi," was a finalist for the New York Photo Festival Book Award this year. "People are still being kidnapped. But they still pack the plazas and they still line up for 10 miles of a parade route to see these queens go by."

Check out the story over at the New York Times -- and be sure not to miss Bower's amazing photographs.

24-year-old Rima Fakih -- the recently-crowned Miss USA, and, incidentally, the pageant's first Muslim to claim the title -- gave an interview recently to Patheos.com, wherein she refuted some pretty ridiculous rumors (such as the one claiming she's a Hezbollah spy), and talked openly about her background.

"I don't know why people are so surprised," she said, about the exaggerated reaction to her heritage upon winning the crown. "I'm an American and a Lebanese, but I'm an American first, and everyone in America has their own ethnicity and comes from a different background . . . we all come from somewhere. We don't know who we are until we know where we came from."

She went on to say that, though she is Muslim, there is more to her than her faith. "I believe that religion doesn't define me and it does not define my family," she said, in the interview. "We have an abundance of faiths, and we respect all religions. Yes, we're a Muslim family, but we're also very cultured and we have a mixture of different religions. For example, my brother-in-law is Catholic...I even have two cousins here in New York City who are Jewish. As you can see, my family is just an amazing melting pot of wonderful religions and faiths."

Seems to me that Miss USA 2010 is a sensible one!

Jennifer Hawkins, the now-infamous former Miss Universe who recently posed nude -- and unphotoshopped -- on the cover of Australian Marie Claire recently, apparently to promote positive body image ideals in an otherwise size-0 sort of market. (The cover of the magazine also says that she is doing it for charity, but I didn't read the article, so fill me in if you know the details.) Instead of garnering praise from the feminist community, however, Hawkins was skewered for portraying (what would be considered by most standards to be) her pretty hot body as some sort of pro-feminist statement. NOW, there is all sorts of drama between her and Ricki-Lee Coulter, who I gather is an Australian Idol star?, and the fall-out is that some women's magazine has replaced Hawkins with Coulter as their cover girl. Reason being that Coulter is "respectably" overweight, being a size 14, and thus a better and more realistic role model for women. Oof! This is sort of a complicated issue, but ultimately, both women are both pretty and famous. Perhaps Ricki-Lee is slightly bigger (but she certainly is a petite size 14, from what I can see on google image) and thus it all seems like a series of exploitative publicity stunt. Which, gross.
