Celebrity: January 2010 Archives
Check out Twilight's Alice Cullen (aka Ashley Greene) wearing Sherri Hill in the current issue of Savvy Mag. We have pasted the image below for your convenience! Happy Friday. You're welcome.

Taylor Swift recently did a characteristically cute and funny Q&A for Rolling Stone's latest issue. But for those of you who are itching for more details about Swifty's young life, take a look at the interview outtakes that they've posted online. Some interesting details regarding her upcoming album -- not to mention a few tidbits about her old albums (how she cast the videos, which songs came at the last minute and why) -- are illuminated. Take a look.
This is crazy. Justin Bieber now inspires such an intense degree of mass teenage hysteria that he was threatened with arrest for basically having too many fans. First he was forced to cancel an appearance at a mall in Long Island, NY (I guess due to the threat of rioting?) and then was told that if he didn't go on Twitter to tell his fans to go home, that he would be arrested. This is insane. Someone, please explain to me! What is so special about this kid!
The Screen Actors Guild awards are not necessarily, like, the awards show you've been waiting all season to see. That would be the Oscars. The Golden Globes rank second. The Emmys maybe are third (although those ones are held at a different time, so I guess we can leave them out, but still)? The point is that the SAG awards are important, but not that... interesting. I have for instance never watched them on tv. Is it possible to watch them on TV? I suspect that it is, but I don't know what channel would host them, because I have never bothered to find out in order to try to watch. Regardless, celebrities do dress up for the SAG awards. And this year, they actually dressed way better than they did at the Golden Globes! Perhaps because they weren't trying quite as hard? Regardless, here are a few favorite looks for the night.
Carey Mulligan No one does pixie better than Carey Mulligan right now. Not even (dare I say it?) Natalie Portman.
Kate Hudson Some obviously foolish person recently wrote in their Golden Globes coverage that Kate Hudson was... fat? At the SAG awards, Hudson struck back in a long, straight, slim-fitting white gown (aka, the most unflattering possible kind) and looked amazing, putting all rumors to rest in re: any possible ounce of fat on her body. Touche?
Christina Hendricks This dress is fine, but I mainly think Christina Hendricks knows exactly how to work her look. (Granted her look is beautiful so it's not that complicated.)
Diane Kruger This reminds me of Michelle Williams's unforgettable 2005 Oscar dress (the year of Brokeback Mountain) -- perhaps my favorite of all time. The color is just amazing.
Anna Kendrick I like this! Daring but lovely! Our favorite fashion newcomer of the evening.
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen -- twins, billionaire-moguls, hobo-chic fashionistas, and more recently, legitimate womenswear designers -- have announced that they'll be showing their Fall/Winter 2010 collection of The Row, at NYC's upcoming fashion week. The Row, which is the most upscale line among the girls' repertoire (they also design Elizabeth & James, as well as a more recently announced Olsenboye) is known for its classic, simple pieces, well-tailored designs, and super-soft fabrics. (Also: super high price points.) It will be interesting to see how these girls market their big NYC fashion week debut; they do, after all, know all the right people. And they certainly have enough cash to put behind it. Stay tuned!
Taylor Swift's upcoming single, "Today was a Fairytale," is up for you to preview for free over at DisneyDreaming.com. The song, which she wrote and performed for the soundtrack of Valentine's Day (in which she co-starred along with now-ex-boyfriend Taylor Lautner!) is available on iTunes today. So, does it stack up to You Belong with Me or what??
Last Sunday, the stars were out in their finery for the 67th annual Golden Globe awards. While there were a fair number of fashion mishaps over the course of the evening, there were, as is to be expected, plenty of nice dresses to go around. Here's a roundup of a few of our favorites.
Julia Roberts Simple, chic, charming, and effortless. Not unlike the actress herself.
Chloe Sevigny Did you notice how, when the Big Love star sailed up to the stage to accept her award, Sevigny's frock literally wafted in the wind? Love this dress.
Sandra Bullock Not totally on board with the fabric choice here (although maybe it just photographs poorly?) but this bright-purple number looks lovely on Bullock
Rose Byrne Purple was a theme of the evening... I'm particularly fond of the finely-sculpted upper bust.
I think both Amy Poehler and Will Arnett's outfits here are fine, but what I really love is... this picture.
MTV may not have been fully appreciative of her hosting talents, but Alexa Chung has found herself a new gig now that It's On with Alexa Chung has been cancelled: she has apparently just signed on to design a collection for J. Crew's Madewell brand. There's a reason Alexa constantly finds herself on our best-dressed lists over at here at Tiza Prom Dresses; her style marries femininity with just a little bit of rock-and-roll edge in a sophisticated, fun balance. Her collection will hit Madewell stores this coming September, and apparently will include the likes of retro tea dresses, mod-inspired items, and a mysterious item Alexa called dungaree dresses.
Jennifer Hawkins, the now-infamous former Miss Universe who recently posed nude -- and unphotoshopped -- on the cover of Australian Marie Claire recently, apparently to promote positive body image ideals in an otherwise size-0 sort of market. (The cover of the magazine also says that she is doing it for charity, but I didn't read the article, so fill me in if you know the details.) Instead of garnering praise from the feminist community, however, Hawkins was skewered for portraying (what would be considered by most standards to be) her pretty hot body as some sort of pro-feminist statement. NOW, there is all sorts of drama between her and Ricki-Lee Coulter, who I gather is an Australian Idol star?, and the fall-out is that some women's magazine has replaced Hawkins with Coulter as their cover girl. Reason being that Coulter is "respectably" overweight, being a size 14, and thus a better and more realistic role model for women. Oof! This is sort of a complicated issue, but ultimately, both women are both pretty and famous. Perhaps Ricki-Lee is slightly bigger (but she certainly is a petite size 14, from what I can see on google image) and thus it all seems like a series of exploitative publicity stunt. Which, gross.
Prom season has officially started (in a manner of speaking) which means that young women everywhere will soon be looking for all manners of the Perfect Prom Dress. (Hint: We have all the answers right here.) But don't let last year's dress gather dust in the closet. The Cinderella Project of Baton Rouge is a not-for-profit organization that collects prom dresses to distribute to less financially fortunate girls this spring -- so that they can go to prom. Don't let your hand-me-downs go to waste! If you happen to be in the Baton Rouge, LA area, drop your dresses of at any branch of the YMCA through January 24. Or, check out their website right here. They need all varieties of contemporary dress styles (in good condition, of course), dry cleaned and on hangers. Chances are you were overdue for a good closet-cleanout anyway.
Calling all Gleeks! Sources report that Fox's favorite cast of singing, dancing, baby-faking, bitchery-making high school nerds will soon be expanding! They're auditioning for three new characters for Glee's second season (which, FYI, was just picked up), and will be considering both amateurs and professionals between the ages of 16 and 26. So what are you waiting for? Oh, right. The Fox website has yet to post the info. We'll post the link as soon as they do. In the meantime, I would advise you to start practicing your standard mashed potato. (Writing a few of your own mashups probably wouldn't hurt either.)
Admittedly, Barbie dolls have not been cutting edge for, um, awhile. But now, a 29-year-old "doll player" (who knows what that means? Please fill me in) named Veik has changed all of that by recreating Lady Gaga's wardrobe -- for Barbies. Apparently, Veik, who hails from Beijing, was so assiduous as to not only get the details exact -- take a look at the amazing Green Frog Dress -- but also to match Gaga's outfits to the hairstyles she wore with them. This stuff is so ridiculously cool that it could make me... (gasp) want a Barbie? ( Refinery29)
Lately, many people have been talking about the newest (sort of...) Teen Sensation, Nick Jonas & The Administration, the littlest Jonas's new band. First of all, the kid has unrolled concept, hype, video, and tour in like, a two week period -- so there is lots of buzz surrounding the project. Then, of course, there is the fact that he is... a Jonas brother. But it was not totally clear how, um, ... good the band was going to be.
Well, SmallJo and company played a concert and so far the news is good. Is it possible that this kid will transcend the Disney image that has gotten him so far? The jury is still out but... presumably not for long.
Oh, and happy new year!
