Sherri Hill has just unveiled her 2010 Prom Dress Collection, and the looks, which involve all manners of florals, sheers, layers, and pastels, invoke a sort of Midsummer Night's Dream feeling: irreverent, but also romantic and a little bit dreamy. The dresses are flowy and tulle-laden, but also (most importantly) fun, and unique. Check them out here.

Halloween is just around the corner which means that, if you are anything like me, you have approximately three weeks before the time will come to throw open your closet doors in a fit of last-minute, pre-party costume-creationary panic. Now, sometimes that panic is the key ingredient for inspiration; a few of my best costumes of all time have arisen in this manner. But it is always nice to have a backup. And since I know at least one thing that most of you readers have in your closets, I am going to do a little roundup of prom-dress-utilizing (but not ruining - mostly) Halloween costumes.

1. Carrie
Okay, this one totally will ruin your old prom dress. Or maybe...your sister's? Anyway, if you happen to have a long, plain, strappy, v-neck, and no-longer-in-use dress lying around, this costume is easy, appropriately gory, and fun. All you need is a wig of long, straight, brown hair (if yours isn't already like that), aforementioned long dress, and a LOT of red food coloring applied in an artfully "blood-splattered" manner. And, done! TOTALLY CREEPY.

carrie.jpg
2. Marie Antoinette
Now, this one requires a slightly fancier dress and many more crazily elaborate accessories (although if you're feeling indie- and Sofia Coppola-inspired, you could always substitute the kitten heels for hot-pink hi-tops). But it also offers endless opportunities for creativity: think layer upon layer of tulle, funny hats, long, golden curls. Obviously the best part about this costume in the Halloween sense of things is that you can include a post-guillotine sort of theme. Eliminating one's head altogether would be tricky to do as a costume, but it would be fairly easy to imagine that the fair Marie had reattached her topper (with a green ribbon, say?) and ... well, I'll let you use your imagination for what exactly that would mean.
(Sort of like this:

but, you know, undead)

3. Morticia Addams
One of our favorite style icons of all time pulled off the Morticia Addams look to great effect years ago, in the film adaptation of the beloved Addams family tv series. Of course, Anjelica Huston always brings her own witchy charm to the table, but for Halloween what you really need to know is: long black dress. Now, lady Addams didn't really show a lot of skin so, if the prom dress in question is a strappy sort of thing, I would suggest covering it up with a drapey, jackety, or flowy (but definitely black) garment on top. (A long cardigan or blazer would be suffiicent.) Then, throw on a long black wig and some white face-paint and you're good to go. (Excessive black eye makeup optional but recommended.)

anjelica.jpg
4. Cleopatra

In (my) recent memory, Cleopatra had a long white toga thing going on, but on the off-chance that you do not have a long white prom dress hanging in your closet, follow the Elizabeth Taylor take: something sexy, faintly toga-like, and accessorized with LOADS of gold jewelry, tons of black eyeliner, and that blunt, black hair. Which means, any plain-colored, simply-cut dress can be given a quick makeover (thick belt, a little toga-esque twist, if possible) to full effect. God, that hair is so amazing:
cleopatra.jpg
Please feel free to go for the mini-braids.

Those are our favorite examples of the moment, but get creative: when you think about it, there are so many things you can do with a prom dress. We'll leave you with a little list of inspirational figures:

** Cinderalla, Snow White, Belle, or basically any other Disney heroine other than Nala and Pocahontas (unless you happened to have a really amazing prom dress of past)

** Passengers on the Titanic. Lends endless possibilities in re: the death element

** The White Witch, the White Queen, or any other regal/evil witch-queen

** Mrs. Lovett from Sweeney Todd, or really just Helena Bonham Carter in any iteration.

Critical Critiques by Every Body

|

Looks great on your laptop screen, but how will a dress fit in real life? Tiza fashionistas gathered some gals of all shapes and sizes to get authentic opinions on our spotlight dresses of the season. Find your body match and learn all about your gown.

The dress: A flouncy, firey red floor-length with crisscross straps and shimmery beaded embellishment at the bust.

The Apple Gal: "I like this dress a lot. It's clean cut and there's no extra fabric, so it looks like it wouldn't make me look any rounder. I like the solid color. It draws attention upwards, especially with the cool straps and beads."

The Pear Princess: "The front seems like a mix between an A-line and an empire waist, which is good because I generally wear empire waists and I get tired of that. So, this is a refreshing style! It's smooth down to the floor, which fits me, too."

The Hourglass: "It's pretty, elegant. But I tend to wear dresses that are a little tighter or slinkier. I won't lie, I like my figure."

Ms. Petite: "Floor-lengths are hard for me. Usually have to alter. But this one is simple enough that I'd give it a try. I like the straps. It wouldn't fall down or make me look even smaller. If anything, this dress might make me look taller."

Sherri Hill 4101

Lady Slender: "I'm not sure about the top. I know I couldn't fill it out, which never looks good. I love the color though."

Once again, thanks girls! More critiques to come!

New Prom Looks for Hot Locks

|

Sick of the same hairstyles? No need to stress over your tresses. If you want to spice up your hair, Tiza's here to give you an earful of hair hints for a hot new look.

For straight-haired ladies who want some curvy curls, use two different size curling iron barrels for realistically luscious ringlets. No two natural curls are ever the same size.

Have a favorite celebrity from a different decade? Find a good pic of your favorite silver screen celeb and take it to the salon for a one night only, look-a-like special.

If you're wearing your hair down and straight and want to add some funk, braid or twist tiny bits of your hair in various lengths. Start some braids from the root and others halfway down the length of your hair. Hold in place with good hair spray or a bit of gel.

If you dig the braids, but want a girlier style, try braiding your hair in place of a headband. Decorate with pearl clips or appropriate flowers that could double as your corsage.

Add some pizzazz. Get creative with hair up or down with accessories. Try looping a small bit of those dangling bangs and clasping with a heart or star-shaped clip to keep them in place right above your temple.

Create your own constellation with mini rhinestone clips scattered through your updo. Or craft a half headband with mini clips in places you know hair will fall out of place.

Hats are hot. Especially paired with a simple, single-colored dress. Go vintage and sophisticated with silky ribbons and tulle. With just the right tilt, you'll be quite a couture catch.

Ponytails aren't just for pom squads and bad hair days. Go classy with a sleek ponytail that balances a super elaborate dress.

You can count on Tiza to jumpstart your creative juice. Pick a style and get going, girl!

Can't justify buying a one-of-a-kind designer dress? Are you constantly buying cheap gowns from department stores that fall apart? Stop emptying your piggy banks on poorly made dresses that will lose all their sequins by the time you step on the stage or dance floor. Here at Tiza, we know why you deserve to splurge on a quality gown that pays in a million magnificent memories.
prom dressesSherri Hill 3021

A well-made gown will last a lifetime. Buying a high-quality dress not only makes you feel like a trillion bucks when you twirl in the mirror, but will last through multiple wears without getting that shabby look. Premium fabric keeps it's shine and shape, especially when carefully pieces together by our top designers.

If you shop right, you can always re-wear. Think sophisticated and single--in color that is. With a classy-cut gown that flatters your figure, you can revamp your evening ensemble by stocking up on cheaper accessories. If you invest in a nice black dress, you can do dangly hot pink rhinestones for prom and sweet pearl studs for your friend's summer wedding. You can have a hundred outfits with one good dress.

A fancy dress isn't just for prom and pageants. Think of your audience (trust me, darling, you have one).  If you're going to a symphony or fancy theatre, the people there will most likely not be the kids from your high school dances. A cocktail or dinner party downtown will be a whole different crowd than at a college friend's wedding. Nobody has to know!

So no more excuses, ladies. Get on the ball so you can get to the ball in a gown worth it's shimmer in gold.

Taking the Plunge: When to Show Skin

|

Planning on showing some skin in your dress tonight? While many daring designs can flatter the female figure, there are a few things to consider before plunging that neckline or baring your back.

A dress should accentuate your figure's best features. If you have a lean, muscular back, with strong shoulders, go backless, especially if you're lacking in the chest. This draws attention to your sexy side.

Jovani prom dresses

If you have a flat stomach, try a dress with cut outs that pull around your torso. This also draws the eye to the region you're proud of. Show off those abs. You put the crunches in.

For curvy girls with a little more junk in the trunk, if you're feeling bold, go short. Stick with a supportive torso that flatters your chest and pick a length you're comfortable with. Add a pair of stilettos to emphasize your calves.

If you're on the shorter side, think short as well. Remember, a petite frame requires less fabric even for a conservative dress. The smallest slit will make a magnified impression. So, don't go too low with a neckline and watch the slit length. Also, to make you appear taller, avoid torso cut-outs.

For tall girls, a low back that swoops deep to the top of the tailbone creates an elegant, lush flow, especially if the dress sweeps to the ground. Don't cover up a backless dress with hair. Put it up!

When thinking low neckline, make sure you wear accurate bust support. If you're super rail thin, steer clear of low necklines to avoid looking sickly. Try a short, bubble dress with a heart-shaped torso instead.

Release your inner daring diva and bare some skin this season with a sizzling dress from Tiza today!

When to Dress Shop

|

You just broke up with your boyfriend and downed a gallon of chocolate ice cream. Don't even think about dress shopping with those red puffy eyes and pockets pull of tissues. When it comes to searching for the perfect gown, a girl has to bring her A game to shop.

At Tiza, we make it too easy to shop without getting out of bed. But, it's important to make sure your head's in the right place before you hand over that credit card. We like our decisions rational around here. Use our handy self-assessment to check in with yourself before heading to the dress checkout.

Are you stressed? A frazzled brain makes fuzzy choices. We don't need meltdowns because they're out of your dress size. Plan to shop at a time of day when you know you're least stressed. Are you calm after work? On the weekend? Keep your cool for a catchy purchase.

Trauma or drama? Anything horrible just happen? From bad test grades to family emergencies, a traumatic experience can definitely hinder good gown decisions.

Are you hungry? A grumbling tummy will distract you from focusing on necessary dress details.

Have you slept enough? A tired body gets cranky. A cranky girl cries easily. A crying girl can't see through teary eyes.

Sherri Hill 2014

Who are you shopping with? If your mom stresses you out, go shopping with a friend whose opinion you trust. Don't shop with your boyfriend. Just don't.

Are you in a time crunch? Try not to cram in shopping time between classes or in a tight schedule. You'll likely look over the perfect dress if you scurry around a mall or frantically scroll through web pages. Plan a whole afternoon devoted to dress shopping.

Choose your dress in your right mind. This could be the most important decision ever.

2009 Plus Size Prom Dresses

|
Online is one of the best places for plus size women to shop. Most dress boutiques do not stock near enough plus size dresses to meet the demand. At best you will find a very limited selection. With 66 percent of women in the US looking for size 12 or larger it can be a real challenge to find the dress of your dreams in a local shop.
Shopping for plus size prom dresses on the Internet is becoming increasingly popular. Tiza has countless success stories and happy customers in plus size. When browsing for a plus size prom dress there are some things to keep in mind.

- Like any special occasion shopper it is best to look and buy your prom dress early. By January all the new styles are in stores or available online. From that time on the selection only gets smaller. To have first choice get your dress in January or February before the great styles sell out.

- Measurements are very important. Tiza does provide size charts that can be a great tool. We recommend having a professional take your measurements if you have not worn the designer you are ordering before and do not already know your size. Always remember to not get too tight of measurement and to leave yourself some breathing room. It is much easier to take a dress in then it is to try and make a dress that is too small work.

- Now you are ready to find your plus size prom dress at Tiza.com

Sherri Hill 2008 Prom Dresses

Sherri Hill prom Sherri Hill's new prom collection is slowly starting to come out, a few gorgeous gowns at a time. Last week we got a sneak peek at some of her prom gowns- very unique design, beautiful prints and patterns and irresistible fabrics. Her short dresses are sassy with a unique flair and her long gowns are dramatic with some long skirts, high slits and a unique embellishment for each one.
This great couture fit gown is made from jewel-toned satin and has the most intricately cut bodice creating a beautiful hourglass form. There are also little pockets on the sides, which are definitely in for this season. We love this red carpet gown. It also comes in various colors like black, emerald and ruby red.
Another one of our favorites is this glamour gown. Imagine wearing this strapless, full-length dress, covered from head to toe in beads, sequins and silk chiffon. Tight fit, sexy slit- you are ready to rock the night away. This shimmering gown is available in platinum, gold, rose and black.
Rock the Hollywood red carpet in a vintage style, short cocktail dress. Beads and semi-precious stones in shades of ivory and gold float on silk chiffon. This one is also available in champagne and pewter colors.
