Pamper Yourself For Prom!

Manicure

1. First thing's first- you have to get your nails nice and clean before you doll them up. Start by removing any old nail polish using a cotton ball and some remover. There is non-acetone and acetone remover, but the latter works much faster and better on dark colors. And make sure that your nails are left to their natural color once you've removed the polish. Some dark nail polishes can stain the nails and give them a yellow shade. But have no fear? There is a super great product called Bubble White that can get rid of the yellow-y tint in about five minutes.

2. Next step is to get those nails even and beautifully-shaped. You will need a fine-grit file with a 180 to 240 grit. Pick one of these up at any local drug or beauty store. As you begin to file your nails, work from the sides inward to create stronger edges and to avoid any splitting and breakage.

3. Now it is time to buff up those nails. Well, not exactly. Basically, buffing the nails is the same as exfoliating to remove any unwanted particles on the nails. This will allow for the nail to be smoother and the polish to coat better. But be careful. Over-buffing will give you weak nails and the last thing you want is limp fingertip on prom night. Look for a really soft buff, preferably something smoother than 240 grit.

4. After you've gotten your nails all shiny and smooth, it's time to fix the cuticles. The cuticles can often look very ragged and damaged, especially after working a lot with your hands. They too need to be even and smooth. Get some cuticle oil and a cuticle pusher from any beauty store. Then slowly work the oil into your cuticles with the opposite hand. Use the tip of the cuticle pusher to softly even every edge of the cuticles. Repeat on the opposite set of fingers.

5. Once your nails are in tip-top shape, you can get them ready to paint. Use another cotton ball and the same polish remover to remove any excess cuticle oil that is still on the nail. You may also want to consider using a base coat on your nail before applying the colored polish. This will help the color to last longer.

6. After the base coat has finished drying, choose the color you want for your nails. Be sure to choose something that will match your dress. You do not want something that will clash and take away from your make-up jewelry or prom dress. You want to apply two coats of polish. Be prepared with an extra towelette to remove any excess polish that drifts onto your skin. The secret to getting even color is polishing 2/3 down the nail and firmly pressing the polish toward the cuticle. Make sure your brush strokes are equally soft and easy.

7. To finish up your at-home manicure, use a top coat to protect the polish you just so carefully applied. This will prevent the polish from chipping or wearing off. If you have the time and patience, apply top coat every night to keep your nails looking great.

Forget Me Nots For Prom

|

If you've already been to a high school prom or any formal dance for that matter, there may have been a few things that you wish you had on that night. And if this is your first event, let us tell you from our own prom experiences - even if you think that you might not need it now, it is very likely that you will during prom. These are the things you definitely didn't think about before prom:

1. You have to dance at your senior prom. It's an absolute must. But when you are done getting down and boogying, don't be surprised to find parts of your hair all over the place. This is where the trusty hair mister comes in. This will help all the stray-away strands go back flat, where they belong.

2. Your eyes have to be unforgettable at prom. One common misconception is that to keep your lashes looking fabulous you should keep applying mascara throughout the night. This turns out to be a big no-no and a cause for the clumps. Instead, bring along a small eyeliner pencil. This will do just the trick and make your eyes pop. Another trick is using waterproof mascara. This will be the best decision you ever made, especially if you plan on having a few of those so-long-senior tears at the end of the night.

3. This isn't Hollywood. You don't want things falling out of place on your prom night. Invest in some clothing tape or double-sided tape to make sure that everything stays put during prom.

4. Remember that bare legs are always sexier, but if you choose to go with panty hose, just be careful not to snag them or put a run in them. If the unfortunate incident does occur, bring some clear nail polish along and apply it at both ends of the run to prevent it from spreading.

5. Stick a few extra bobby pins in your purse. You never know when you or a girlfriend might really need one.

6. Also, toss in a couple of safety pins in case something on your dress comes undone or your date's boutonniere falls off.

7. Sometimes dancing can make you sweat and sweat equals funky body odor. Carry a mini deodorant stick to bring your nose some ease after all the dance-floor fun.

8. Your teeth aren't the only things that should look pearly on prom night. Bring an extra lip gloss to keep your lips shimmery too.

9. Beauty and style has its price. That's why those adorable shoes you picked out to match your prom dress actually hate you and start to kill your feet. So bring some band-aides along to ease some of the pain until the end of the night.

10. Are you wearing your hair down or up? If up, then great. But if down, then be sure to bring a mini-hairbrush or comb to keep the tangles away.

11. The reality is that some people are always chewing gum. They should just face it. They are addicted to the chewing. If you must chew gum on prom night, try something that will keep your teeth white and remove any punch stains that might stand out in your prom picture.

12. Keep some Q-tips handy. These will help you tidy yourself up if say tears or sweat has gotten to your eye makeup.

13. Say goodbye to that shiny nose for your prom pictures. Get some powder-lined sheets to wipe all of the oil away just in time for the cameras.

14. We must warn you about fake eyelashes - they will surely fall off if you start crying. To prevent any major eyelash embarrassments, bring the extra eyelash glue along.

15. Every girl is going to want to touch up her makeup during prom night. Find yourself a mini-makeup kit that has everything you will need: eyeshadow, blush and lip color.

16. Don't be one of those girls that expects guys to pay for everything. Your date already paid for dinner and bought the prom tickets. The least you could do is treat him to a late night snack or dessert. Just make sure you have a little bit of extra cash.

17. The last and probably the most important item you could forget to bring to prom is a camera! You have to cherish all those prom-night moments and a few clicks will do just the trick.

Make Up for Prom

|
It can be very easy to over-do-it when applying our everyday make-up, and it's obvious too. Don't let prom night be another one of those heavy-duty make-up evenings. This night has to be perfect and we have some easy tips to help your make-up look fantastic for prom night.
First, let's give a run-down on the important things to consider when applying make-up: foundation, eyes, lips and blush.
When you apply foundation, make sure that your face is clean and you remove old make-up or dirt. Once your face is clean, select a foundation that perfectly matches your skin tone. It is always obvious when a girl is wearing a concealer or foundation that is way too dark or light. It is also important to cover up any blemishes or discolored areas from sun damage. WATCH OUT for foundation lines around the neck, so double-check to make sure that everything is blended in.
Next, choose between the lips and the eyes. If you highlight both with lots of make-up, you will just look like you are over-doing it. Big mistake. If you choose the eyes, pick eyeliner that compliments the dress and contrasts with the eye shadow. You do not want them to totally match the dress. Smoky eyes are another great look for prom. Here are some steps to getting those smoky eyes:
Before you apply anything, make sure that your eyelids are oil-free. Start with a primer.
Next, apply the eyeliner. Apply black, brown or gray liner above the upper lash line. Draw the line thicker in the middle of the eye. If you feel like spicing things up, go for a purple, blue or deep-green liner.
If you want to apply eyeliner under the bottom lash line, you need lighter color eyeliner. Smudge the bottom liner for the real smoky effect.
Now it is time to apply the base color, which should also be lighter. Cream or pearl shades create shimmery shadows over the eyelids. Check out different bases at Sephora.
Now to make the eyelids smoky you need a darker eye shadow and an eye shadow brush. Start blending the color at your lash line. Make sure the liner disappears.
If you need some help blending, use a Q-tip.
Add the finishing touches with some mascara.

The next step is applying blush. Think about your fashion style and your skin color. The more natural, the better.
For your lips, decided between lip-gloss and lipstick. Some girls just want their lips to shine, but if you choose lipstick, you want your lips to be bright. Red and dark pinks are always hot for prom. Don't pick a color your grandmother would wear. And remember if you choose to do bright lip stick to keep your eyes simple.

Taking Care of Your Prom Dress

|
Prom night might be over, but that doesn't mean you can't wear your prom dress again and again. To keep your prom dress looking great and just as new for any formal gown occasion, there are just a few things to keep in mind.
Remember to have your gown dry-cleaned to remove any food or beverage stains. Be sure to talk with your dry-cleaner before handing over your prom dress. Some colors may fade or delicate fabrics could get ripped. Pay attention to the washing instructions on the inside tag.
After your prom dress has been cleaned and ironed, decide if want to store it in a box or on a hanger. If you choose to put your dress in a box, you can give the box to the cleaners and ask them to pack it for your. But be sure to watch him or her pack the dress to make sure that it was cleaned correctly before being stored away.
If you are going to hang your dress, make sure it is light enough so that it will not stretch out the neckline or the straps.
When you wrap your dress on the hanger or in the box, it is important to use a material that is archival-safe and acid-free. This will protect the prom dress from any sharp creases. Avoid using metal materials like pins because they could rust over time and stain your dress. Do not use plastic to wrap your dress because it could also leave a chemical residue over time. Lastly, be sure to store the dress in a place that will not be attacked by water or humidity.
Follow these simple steps and your prom dress will be ready to wear for the years to come.

Prom Diet and Exercise

|

Only a few weeks left until prom and you still have a lot of work to do, including getting your figure into tip-top shape. You want your prom dress to fit perfectly and with a little diet and exercise, it will do just that.
While dieting isn't a very popular word, we want to give you just a few tips on how to safely drop a few quick pounds for prom night. Just a few weeks before the before the big night, avoid eating foods such as breads or pastas that are high in carbohydrates. These foods along with soft drinks and colas cause bloating in our stomachs making us uncomfortable and hardly able to dance. But remember that you don't have to cut these items out completely. A high carbohydrate meal or a soda once or twice week won't rack up the pounds.
Also avoid eating junk foods like candy bars and potato chips. You can easily replace these with healthier snack foods like fruit, nuts or cheese cubes. Try to completely avoid fast food restaurants. All of the fast food menu items are just full of empty calories and will do nothing good for your figure on prom night.
Now, for what you CAN eat! High protein foods such as chicken and fish are great at burning fat. But eat meats in moderation with your vegetables. Also, remember not to stuff yourself. If you decrease your portions, your body will get used to the difference and you will start to feel fuller even though you are eating less.
Remember to drink lots of water. Six to eight glasses of water a day will keep your body hydrated as well get rid of food cravings, help your complexion and even give you some extra energy.
As far as exercising goes, you should be trying to tone your body during the weeks before prom. Make a daily routine for you and your friends to do. Be sure to include sit-ups or crunches, push-ups and some cardio work such as jogging or speed walking. But don't go too crazy with the exercise. You will see faster results if you keep your workouts consistent.
*Important* Be sure to consult your physician before starting a new diet or exercise routine.

Dress Alterations

|
In order for your prom dress to look absolutely perfect, alterations are a necessary step to creating the perfect fit.

The first step is finding a good seamstress. Many dress shops have a seamstress on staff and she has plenty of experience altering evening wear all day. Bridal shops are another place to find a talented seamstress. These women are constantly working on difficult wedding dresses and your prom dress will probably be extremely easy for them.

For hemming, expect to pay $10-$20, but every seamstress is different. It wouldn't hurt to call ahead for a bid or drop in for a consult with your gown.

If you have some height and want to add length to your gown, consider making the dress a high-low hem line. This kind of hem is short in the front and low in the back. This style is rather popular and is in style just as much as floor length dresses. You could also consider wearing flat ballerina shoes or designer flip-flops instead of heels. But if you are set on wearing a floor length gown with high-heels, you can always order a shawl that matches your gown and have a seamstress add it to the bottom of the dress. This usually costs about $20.

If you are ordering a dress from the Internet, order one size bigger and see a seamstress to take it in. It's very easy and inexpensive to take a gown in a few inches, $10-$20. But if you order a size too small, it is difficult and sometimes impossible to let out the dress. The fabric will either expose pin holes or there may not be enough material to let it out.

For trains, ask your seamstress to keep the train, but craft something so that it can be brought up for dancing. You can ask for a small pearl to be sewn on the back of the dress for a very elegant look then sew some loops of thread to wear the gown would need to be brought up. Now when you are ready to dance at the prom, you just attach the threads around the pearl and you are ready to go without causing any damage to your train. This can cost between $5 and $10.

With just a few alterations, you are ready to paint the prom red!

The Prom Workout

|
So you've found the perfect prom dress, but it's fitting a little snugger than you would like. First, realize that we have all been there. Second, understand that losing a little bit of weight is not as difficult as you may be thinking.

Begin with watching your diet. Don't indulge in foods that are high in fats and beyond the limits of carbs. Stick to fruits, veggies, and meats that are high in protein. These foods will be your body's best friend. In most cases you will see results in your diet change alone.

Along with a healthy diet should follow an active lifestyle. The best way is walking. By taking a brisk walk for one hour every day will not only shape you, get your blood flowing, but get your heart pumping. Resulting will be a more energetic you with a healthy glow. Another option is yoga. If you do choose something like yoga, make sure you do the stretches properly to avoid overdoing it and/or pulling muscles.

Remember all you need is determination and a great dress! Enjoy your prom and your new lifestyle!

Prom Hair That Will Make Them Stare

|
Okay, so I've been surfing through some prom forums lately, and I've found a ton of posts regarding HAIR. What to do with your do? Let's begin.

Look at a lot of the models featured on our site and you will notice that long and down are the way they have chosen to lay their locks. In the world of modeling hair is so important in creating a desired look. Choose the correct size roller for your hair. Use a large roller if you have long hair and want loose curls and small rollers if you have short hair or if you just want tighter curls. Starting from the bottom up roll your hair in small to medium sized chunks. Let the rollers sit for about 10 minutes or longer to set the curls. Unroll hair and finger comb hair (brush if only waves are desired). Now use hairspray generously. Gather hair into a barrette(s) or clip if you wish to keep the hair out of your eyes. Last, apply glitter, jewels, or hair appliqués if desired. Ringlets for someone with short hair will also be super cute.

Here's something especially for you medium haired girls. You might want to choose an up do with a couple of loose chunks of hair hanging in the very front. These loose strands will frame your face perfectly. Keep the hair straight or just loosely curled at the ends.

Be sure to grab some hair magazines or just browse the web for picture references. Also if you plan to do your own hair (or if a friend or parent plans to do it for you); be sure to practice at least a few days ahead of time. If the styles poses too difficult or maybe it just doesn't look quite as you imagined on yourself; at least you have time to pick a different style. If you pick a do that has a bunch of strategically placed tight curls and requires a lot of pinning; I recommend leaving that to a professional. You'll need to make your appointment WAY ahead of time though.

Don't forget that a simple style can be elegant, romantic, and mysterious (as proven on our website). Try not to go overboard with curls and accessories to avoid looking corny.

How to Take Stunning Prom Pictures

Prom is a celebration that everyone wants to remember and one of the best ways is to capture those moments on camera! Here are some tips of how to be camera ready when the big day arrives.

1. Girls, make sure to wear some makeup. We suggest at least some foundation, lipstick, and blush.

2. Before prom night, put your dress and desired makeup on. Have a friend or your parents take some practice shots (using flash) and see how they turn out. This is a great way to know ahead of time if you need to wear more color or have too much. No one wants to look washed out or painted.

3. If your budget allows, we suggest you book a photographer to come take some pictures at the house with your date and/or group. The photographer will know the right angles and lighting to use. This will also allow your parents to be less stressed and enjoy the evening as well. Take as many shots as you can because they will be taken with an expensive camera that will be of best quality.

4. Make sure to take disposable cameras with you and encourage your friends to do the same. This way if you miss a picture, one of your friends may have it caught on theirs.

5. Do take formal pictures, but don't forget to take relaxed ones.

6. Make a date to get together after prom to share and swap those beautiful pictures!

Prom Hair Styles

|
If you have short hair you can still have a great short prom hair style. When you are looking for ways to do short prom hair styles you most likely will want to look at pictures of prom hair. It is easier to see what you are trying to visualize if you have a picture of a short prom hair style to compare to. There are many sites, catalogs, books and magazines that have pictures of prom hair. You can check out your favorite salon to see what books they have to offer and even see if they have pictures of short prom hair styles that they have taken for their portfolios.

The Internet is a great source for finding short prom hair styles and this website even has links to some of those sources. Another great place to look that is probably right in your own home is a fashion magazine. They always have models with hair done in such a way that it would work for prom. Short hairstyles are in right now and another good place to get ideas from is TV and movies. Check out red carpet events and see what the stars are doing for their short hair. Take the a picture of short prom hair styles into your stylist and ask if she can do it or have your girlfriends practice on your hair to see it they can recreate the same look. You could each take turns trying them out and see which one looks best.

Prom Hair tips

|
After you get your dress and accessories you will need to decide on how you will do your hair for prom. There are so many ways to wear your hair for prom that you might want to try out a whole bunch to determine what looks best on you.

Your mom and your girlfriends can help to do your hair for prom or you can even do your own hair for prom. Either route you will want to try out a couple of ways to do your hair for prom to not only determine what looks best as we mention above but what is the easiest for you to accomplish. After you do your hair for prom test it out. Dance around, flip your head and any other movement you think you will be doing that night. The worst thing is to have carefully coifed hair for prom only to have it fall out midway through the evening.

Prom Night Dinner

|
The prom dinner is one of the most traditional features of prom night. There are so many different ideas on where to have your prom dinner you will have no problem on resources. You will just need to determine a budget and then from there your prom dinner can be planned. You will also want to determine how many couples will be with you or if it will just be you and your date.

There are many fine restaurants that cater to prom dinner and you can even reserve a whole restaurant with a large party. You can find a unique and different place to have your prom dinner and then have a restaurant cater there. Everyone has heard of the stories of prom dinner being served at a table for two on a street median or at the top of a multi-storied building. Many movies and TV shows have shown creative ways to have a romantic dinner that can translate to your prom dinner.
The way that you move your body and walk has an enormous effect on the way that you feel and your confidence levels.

Lets start with an exercise.

Imagine there are two people standing in front of you - one with "negative body language" and one with "positive body language".

I'd now like you to write down what you are observing with each of these people.

How are they standing?
Where are their eyes looking?
Where have they got their head?
How are they talking?
How are they moving?
