Fun: December 2009 Archives

Lindsay Lohan, multifaceted basketcase and currently also a fashion designer, has decided to eschew the recent -- and overwhelmingly negative -- feedback she has received for her designs at the house of Ungaro. Apparently, the sassy, hard-partying, largely bewildering young lady will be turning her burgeoning leggings line 6126 into a full-fledged clothing label. Who knows! Lindsay is clearly passionate about fashion, and if the actress is smart, she'll employ a team of smart, talented, creative fashion designers to help her make this endeavor successful. Who knows what La Lohan has up her sleeve! Let's just try to be positive here, okay?!

Gossip Girl's Jessica Szohr graces Teen Vogue's February cover, and the Wisconsin native spends a good deal of the piece discussing her days trying to make it as an actress in LA (spoiler alert: it involved a lot of crying into her pillow), and also, her boyfriend, the actor Ed Westwick, whom she describes as "rad." (Note to readers: This strikes me as one of those words that is semi trying - but sort of failing? - to make a comeback. Thoughts?) Regardless, the actress claims not to be a super fashiony type, but given the style revolution that her character, Vanessa (aka "V"), has undergone since season one -- during which she could routinely be spotted wearing tacky neons, cheapo metallics and hundreds of bright plastic bracelets -- it's possible that that the actress has more style than she knows. Check out the interview here

new-years-eve-times-square-2.jpg

New Year's Eve is upon us, which means that, between now and Thursday, 99 percent of the  female population will be scrambling wildly to find the perfect Party Outfit for impending celebrations. (That other one percent is comprised primarily of the annoyingly well-prepared-type that found their outfit months ago, on sale.) NYE is a somewhat fraught holiday to begin with; everyone is always looking for the Perfect Party, the Perfect Date, the Perfect Outfit, all for purposes of having the Funnest Night Out Of All Time. But ultimately, to me, New Year's Eve is about celebrating the good things about the past year. How perfect (also, thrifty: don't forget that 2009 was not the best year in terms of uh, the global economy, etc.), then, to wear one's favorite outfit from 2009 -- dressed up or down -- for the occasion.

New Year's Eve can also be a great time to recycle any prom dresses that may not otherwise see the light of day for awhile. Short dresses, especially, can be dressed down by wearing a pair of boots (Doc Martens would give any dress that 90s grunge edge), or even a pair of oxford flats. (Black is more versatile but with the right combination, brown could work too.) A simple pair of heels is always a staple, and paired with black opaque tights and a cool cardigan or jacket, you'll achieve just the right combination of dressy and blase for the holiday.

Good luck!
Happy holidays! Justin Bieber rang in the Christmas festivities at the White House earlier this week, where the Obamas looked respectfully on. I feel like Sasha and Malia perhaps had to give their dad a tutorial on this 15-year-old banged pop sensation, but... they seem to be enjoying it all enough! Here's the clip:

2009 is almost over, and chances are, you plan to spend the break lying around catching up on your missed television and also, sleep. That is certainly my plan, too. But sometimes, hanging around the house with nothing to do can get a little bit... old. So, here is a very reliable source of recommended reading for your holiday, in the event that you should (gasp) find the time to read a book. Check it out here. I personally cannot wait for, which I have requested from my mother.

Happy holidays!
marvadene.jpg

It appears that women's basketball has finally found its Michael Jordan -- although, at only 16, Marvadene Anderson still has a couple years before she can turn pro. The Jamaica-born Anderson, who by the way also happens to be the tallest teenage girl in the world -- she clocks in at 6'11'' and is still growing -- recently got a scholarship to come to the United States to play basketball at Rutgers Prep, where she towers (almost comically) over her 5'2'' teammates. Anderson has only been playing the sport for a few months, but was Jamaica's highest scorer in netball -- a sport similar to basketball. Needless to say, college coaches everywhere must be getting pretty excited...

Top ten cutest rock'n'roll dreamboats

The Nashville music blog Nashville's Dead has published their list of then 10 cutest boys in rock'n'roll. Among the chosen include members of: the Smith Westerns, Ducktails, and The Sleaze (don't want to ruin all the secrets!). This is a good list, but to me it is less about cuteness and more just a compilation of ... indie rock's current biggest rising scenesters? Or maybe the curator of this list (the writer of blog PopJew) just have slightly different taste in hot boyz. But either way! Good music on there! File this post under: For your consideration.

One less Jonas brother on the market

Woe are teenage girls everywhere! This weekend, the oldest of the strangely-haired Jonas boy trio (also, according to Wikipedia, known by the name of...K2? Is he really? This is news to me) totally got married. Whoa! I was so shocked when I read this news that I looked up K2's age and discovered that in fact he is 22, and not 15. But still! 22 is really young to be getting married -- unless, I guess, you are in a really wholesome trio of pop-singer brothers. Anyway, the bride, former hairdresser Danielle Deleasa (who is 23), wore Vera Wang and apparently the duo had a "fairytale wedding" at Oheko Castle in Long Island, NY. There are a lot of questions that this whole incident raises in my mind, but foremost among them is: There is a castle in Long Island? Huh.

Twilight coverage: never to end

I sort of thought that once New Moon came out, we would have a tiny break from all of the incessant twilight coverage. Wrong!! So wrong. Instead, the world has just moved on... to the Eclipse portion of the Twilight Saga. Ashley Greene is giving interviews about her stunt training (also, prom dresses), critics are expostulating on their predictions for the next installment, and director David Slade is posting updates about production on his Twitter. So far, however, what I am most enjoying is New Moon LOLcats

Enjoy!

Apparently, MTV is remaking Teen Wolf into a television series. First of all, for the record, I wish that people would stop ruining great 80s movies with bad remakes. But who knows, maybe this one will be awesome! So far, it looks like the cast features... Tyler Posey, Tyler Hoechlin, Crystal Reed and Dylan O'Brien. Great for them! I am sure they are very nice people. But dare I point out the obvious? Tyler + Tyler  Taylor Lautner. And that is all I have to say on the subject.

Congratulations to Courtney Basara and Haley O'Brien -- the newly-crowned Miss Minnesota USA 2010 and Miss Minnesota Teen USA 2010, respectively. The two ladies, who were awarded their titles this December, were both crowned in lovely Sherri Hill designs. Check out more Sherri Hill styles right here

In the meantime, here 's a shot of the lovely winners in their gowns:

Dan Humphrey's Reading List

Gossip Girl is so useful! In addition to providing me with an endless supply of writing material and also sartorial inspiration, the epic programme about Upper East Side teens is now also helping us improve our minds. On the show's website, the "characters" (the show's writers! who actually are very smart I would imagine) have posted some top ten lists. My favorite is Dan Humphrey's reading list:

Don't forget: Dan got into Yale! He was published by the New Yorker! I recommend you start with number 5, which is both good and (ahem) relevant.

So many sequins at Z100's Jingle Ball

This Saturday, Z100 hosted their 2009 Jingle Ball at Madison Square Garden. The obvious stars of the show were, as per every single music-related event of 2009, Swifty, and the newest teen-pop idol of the moment, 15-year-old heartthrob Justin Bieber. Bieber, whose sideswept bangs have been known to cause riots, had no trouble putting on a heart-wrenching (well, to some) show while simultaneously sporting a cast on his leg. Also, he somehow made a cast look semi like an accessory?

For the record, I would not be remotely surprised if 13-year-old girls everywhere picked this up as a winter trend.

Swifty was, as usual, glowing -- shimmering? -- in ever-more sparkles, which one cannot really demean as one might otherwise, because, sorry, they just suit her.

Meanwhile, Leighton Meester turned up in a characteristically fashionable girly-rock ensemble.

And finally, I would just like to say that I am digging Jordin Sparks' shoes.

Taylor Swift reveals true love for...

Def Leppard?

Taylor_Swift_You_Belong_With_Me_video.jpg

This weekend, Taylor Swift was on the cover of T Magazine, the New York Times' Style Magazine. It's a pretty brief piece, but in it, Swift reveals that she was sort of an outcast in high school, due to her love for country music. Didn't Swift go to high school in Nashville? Don't they like country music there? Hm. Maybe I am being a regionalist. Does that word exist? Anyway, you should check out the article
It seems mean-spirited to comment negatively on the fashion at this weekend's Power of Youth event, sponsored by Variety, which encourages young star-types to get involved in philanthropy. Because really, perhaps outfits were not the point of this event, and also, most of the people in attendance appeared to be, you know, kids. So I am just going to comment on my favorite looks of the evening!

Keke Palmer

Keke Palmer's dress is: cute, sparkly, fun, and age-appropriate. Perfect!

Jessica Stroup

The theme of the evening was definitely skinny jeans paired with high boots. Jessica Stroup looks fresh and easy.

Shailene Woodley

Nice call on the Toms. Also, I love the way she pairs the leather jacket with a girly lavender scarf. Perfect mix of tough and feminine. Am also into this girl's sideswept hair thing.

Tyler James Williams

I love this kid. Also, that he has figured out early that the number one rule for cute boys who want to have "style" without having to try too hard is, good sneakers.

Corbin Bleu

Wait. When did this kid turn into a grownup? I didn't even recognize him. Looking pretty classy in that suit.

In the world of Gossip Girl, some things never change: Upper East Side schoolchildren will be educated in the nuanced etiquette of threesomes by the age of 11; buxom blondes will sleep with Congressmen; Lily Bass will get re-married. Oh, and: on Thanksgiving, The Truth Will Come Out. That's why the show's annual holiday extravaganza was, while after Thanksgiving and thus totally anticlimactic, time-wise, a welcome installation of back-to-basics CW drama. In this episode, seasonal plotlines were discarded (Goodbye Duff!), old friends were revisited (Hello Grandma CeCe!) and Lily Bass was caught in yet another web of lies and deception. Meanwhile, Blair goes semi-crazy in the most lovable way, and Jenny and Highlights Brother (don't remember his name?) engage in a war which will end badly no matter what, duh. Finally, we return to season one, as per our expectations, when Dan realizes that, Oh yes! He is in love with V, and Nate realizes that, yup, he still loves Serena. Nate, being the ballsier of the two, declares said love and is rejected, while Dan, the smarter of the two, keeps it to himself and thus guarantees us at least half a season of tv-pining angst to enjoy. Next week, we seem to be in for a treat regarding What Lily Has Been Up To. But in the meantime, I would like to start a petition for the Bitches of Eastwick CW spinoff. Come on! Anyone?

Justin Bieber to sing for Obama

justin-bieber-usher.jpg

Justin Bieber, 15-year-old pop superstar who has of late been known to cause riots, has apparently booked a pretty big job: he'll be performing for President Obama at this year's annual holiday benefit for the National Children's Medical Center in Washington, D.C. How much do you want to bet that this is one of the President's Christmas present to Sasha and/or Malia? (Although maybe they remain loyal to the Jonas boys? Is there a nascent rivalry between teen-dream boy-pop sensations?)

The special, which will be taped at the National Building Museum on December 13, will premiere on TNT on December 20.
