Over the weekend, Congress finally repealed a 1990s-era law that prohibited openly gay men and women from serving in the military. The gay community has long fought against this measure, and President Obama has been advocating for its elimination since his days on the campaign trail. So the weekend repeal was seen as a major victory for gay rights advocates. Lady Gaga, who has also been vocal on her support for repeal, issued a prompt response to a tweet by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. (Side note: Did you ever expect to see such a thing as the highest-ranking senator exchanging tweets with one of the world's least conventional pop stars?) Reads Lady Gaga's ecstatic tweet: "Can't hold back the tears+pride. We did it!i Our voice was heard + today the Senate REPEALED DADT. A triumph for equality after 17 YEARS"
Of course, Lady Gaga never claimed not to be a little bit of a drama queen. But some things are worth celebrating.
